Parkinson's disease is a chronic, progressive neurological disorder that results from the degeneration of neurons in a region of the brain that controls movement. Parkinson's disease is characterized by a number of symptoms including tremors, limb stiffness, slowness of movements, and difficulties with posture and balance with severity tending to worsen over time.
In the United States, it is estimated that 60,000 new cases are diagnosed each year, joining the 1.5 million Americans who currently have Parkinson's disease. While the condition usually develops after the age of 65, 15% of those diagnosed are under 50.
